I. Casting Choices and Character Development
1. The Selection of Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo
Finding the perfect Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji was no easy feat. Producers needed actors who could balance youthful charisma with emotional depth. Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo were selected after multiple rounds of auditions, but many fans don’t know the effort that went into their transformation:
Xiao Zhan had to learn martial arts, swordplay, and traditional etiquette.
Wang Yibo, despite his cool demeanor, dedicated himself to perfecting Lan Wangji’s stoic expressions and subtle emotional shifts.

The drama deviated slightly from the original novel Mo Dao Zu Shi, adding layers of depth to some characters while adjusting relationships for broadcast regulations. However, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s bond remained powerful, resonating deeply with fans worldwide.
II. Set Design and Filming Locations
1. Creating a Magical World
The drama was primarily filmed in Hengdian World Studios, China’s largest film set. Designers meticulously crafted the Cloud Recesses, Lotus Pier, and Burial Mounds, ensuring each location reflected the spirit of the characters:
Cloud Recesses: A place of discipline and tradition, featuring white and blue tones.
Lotus Pier: A vibrant, water-centric landscape symbolizing freedom and warmth.
Burial Mounds: A desolate, mist-covered ruin that visually represented Wei Wuxian’s hardships.
2. Overcoming On-Set Challenges
Extreme weather conditions often interrupted filming, with actors enduring scorching heat and heavy rain. Despite the hardships, the cast remained committed to delivering breathtaking performances.
III. Costume and Makeup Artistry
Renowned designer Chen Tongxun led the costume department, ensuring that each sect had a distinct visual identity:
The Lan Clan’s flowing white and blue robes represented purity and restraint.
The Jiang Clan’s deep purple hues symbolized a balance of passion and control.
The Wen Clan’s red and black aesthetic reflected their dominance and aggression.
Makeup artists also played a crucial role in bringing characters to life, adjusting Xiao Zhan’s mischievous smirk and Wang Yibo’s solemn expressions to match their characters’ arcs.
